The 7 Golden Rules of Using Technology in Schools

Read the blog entry at  http://www.fluency21.com/blogpost.cfm?blogID=2070

In your comments, please respond to the following:

1) Select the most important 3 of the 7 Golden Rules.  List the 3 and then give a one or two sentence justification for each choice.

2) Author an 8th Golden Rule.  Provide a paragraph similar to the ones written in the original blog entry.

3) Read (and comment if you wish) on your fellow scholars' comments.

  1. The New "F Word" is Fear: I want to work in a district that allows more access than most schools allow right now. If we can use sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to enhance our classroom, it will model the appropriate uses of the web!

Don't Trap Technology in a Room: I have heard about Westside's laptop program and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! More districts need to look into laptops for student...going electronic saves paper, textbooks, and MONEY in the long run. Student laptops and tablets are the FUTURE.

Mobile Technology Stretches a Long Way: Basically every kid has a cell phone or mp3 player now. USE these in the classroom! You will be the coolest teacher in school! Let them take notes, read books, take pictures of diagrams, use the calculator. We have all of this technology right at our fingertips and we're not unleashing the potential!!

    Vanessa's 8th Rule:

Don't Be Afraid of Using Technology to be Creative: By the time we get students in high school, they've seen it all and done it all when it comes to school. Boredom sets in. Why do they CARE what you are teaching them? Use iMovie, Animoto, Twitter, current events, PollEverywhere, iPods, smartphones, tablets, etc....use what the kids are using to engage their minds. If you think outside of the box and get the kids out of their monotonous day, they will remember what they did and what they learned because it was really cool. Yes, you can do cool things in school!

  2. 1.MOBILE TECHNOLOGY STRETCHES A LONG WAY: I like this rule because too often as teachers we see mobile phones as bad. They can actually be really useful in the classroom and the kids think it is fun to get to use them in class.

    2. MONEY IS NOT THE PROBLEM: I like this rule because this is often the excuse by most people why we can't have certain technology. Truth is, many technologies are free! Or some are at least at a discount for educational institutions.

3.DON’T TRAP TECHNOLOGY IN A ROOM: I LOVE this rule because I think technology belongs in every room. Technology makes the world go round, it is crazy to me to think that it isn't used in every classroom in the school.

The rule I would add would be to REMIND TEACHERS TO HAVE A BACKUP PLAN. In the schools so far, the servers have failed a lot, and time has been wasted. Teachers need to use technology but still have a plan for when it is not working properly.

  3. 3) MOBILE TECHNOLOGY STRETCHES A LONG WAY.
Every kid has a cell phone or something they can mess with in class. If we control what they can do with their cell phones they might actually be interested or even find something new and cool

    4) THE NEW ‘F WORD’ IS FEAR.
Teachers are scared of technology. I know teachers that do not use technology because they are so used to their old method. If teachers just try, they can find that technology can help the learning. Also having websites blocked also limits what students can find and research on their own.

    6) MONEY IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
I have used so many free tools. All a teacher needs is computers. There are so many free tools on the web that teachers just need to talk and look around for them.

    8) Teach students about technology.
Students love the internet. They don’t necessarily know that the internet can be harmful. Give students a quick overview of the web first before you let the use it. Also safety for the technology is helpful to make sure students don’t abuse or ruin the equipment. For example, like having drinks and food around computers.

  4. TECHNOLOGY IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: I think this is what is holding technology back so much; teachers who are unable to use or understand technology wont and that is truly detrimental to students. The irony is that teachers are expected to participate in continuing education, technology should be a part of that communication.
THE NEW ‘F WORD’ IS FEAR: Same with above, technology wont hurt you, it is meant to help you and there are numerous ways it achieves this. For a teacher to be "afraid" of technology shows a reluctance to want to grow as an educator and provide the best for their students.
DON’T TRAP TECHNOLOGY IN A ROOM: Seriously, computers are not the only representation of technology, and a room full of computers is not the same as a technology lab. Technology is integration.

My rule: Stay up to date with technology. Technology is constantly changing and changing FAST. Once something becomes obsolete it rarely becomes useful in the classroom (especially computers). So it is important to keep up to date to me effective in the classroom

  5. Mobile Technology Stretches A Long Way: The example given seems like such a waste of the 45 minutes. I agree that those minutes can be used more wisely, and that we can tap into the abilities of the smart devices that many students have. The lack of use of these devices seems, to me, to be directly related to number 4, The New 'F' Word is Fear.

Many teachers, administrators and school boards are scared of the power that technology has. But I agree with the author, we have to teach students to use technology ethically, and for their benefit. We have to teach them to be creative also.

Tech Tools are not just a Passing Fad is a true statement! We should dive in and soak up all the learning about how to use the tools we have available! They may change and improve after 6 months, but the outdated model will still do amazing things!

    8. Use Technology to Reach Students: Students live in a digital age, and we can reach them, and understand them, by using digital tools and devices as part of their learning.

  6. THE NEW ‘F WORD’ IS FEAR- Like the article said students are going to be using their mobile devices to get online to the "bad websites" anyway so by putting a block on many sites, including useful ones, only makes the teachers job more limited. Also I liked how the article mentioned that we should be teaching Creative Commons and Copyright instead of blocking the "bad websites."

TECHNOLOGY IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT- The title explains it all. If the teachers don't know how to use the technology that they have it does them no good. How can you expect someone to incorporate the elmo in his or her class if he or she doesn't even understand the difference between the functions of the top light and the bottom light?

DON’T TRAP TECHNOLOGY IN A ROOM- It never occurred to me that the idea of all the computers being in one room is strange. Now that I look at it from a teaching point of view it makes complete sense. By having the students using the computers and technology on a daily basis they will be able to learn more about it and make it easier to transition to the "real world" where they will be expected to be fluent in technology.

Josh Hennagir's 8th Golden Rule- Technology as a tool to make lessons relevant: By using the technology students use in their lives outside of schools they can relate to the lesson more. If they are asked to search on their phones for the nearest movie theater that shows foreign films they will be able to see that this is a function they may use in the future and therefore invest in the activity more. It is a way to trick them into learning about cultural events going on in the community.

  7. TECHNOLOGY IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Teachers who don't understand how to use technology cause issues across the board. You can't give a tool and expect someone to know how to use it!

DON’T TRAP TECHNOLOGY IN A ROOM
Technology gives us the ability to bring the real world into our classrooms. If you hide tech in a computer lab, you also hide the real world behind a door.

INVITE EVERY STAKEHOLDER TO THE CONVERSATION
The only way to get a complete integration of technology into the classroom is to get everyone on board. Without support, the tech will not be put into place.

    Kat's Rule 8
USE TECH TO INTEGRATE THE REAL WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM

Students have to feel that the learning they are doing in the classroom has meaning in the outside world. Tech is a great way to let the students see the integrations. Students who use tech are more likely to take the information they learn in the classroom out into the real world and are more likely to understand "why it matters."

  8. TECHNOLOGY IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. If the teachers don't know how to use technology then they are not able to be an example for the use of technology everyday in life. Furthermore, how can you teach something that you, yourself are not familiar with?

TECH TOOLS ARE NOT JUST A PASSING FAD. This is true. Technology and it's tools are not going to go away. They will only get more advanced. It is important to adjust to and learn the new technology that is available because there is so much more to come.

MONEY IS NOT THE PROBLEM. Free tools are available on the web and more will always arise. If our schools change the way money is distributed, like spending on technology instead of more traditional venues, the technology will probably prove to be more effective.

    Kristine's Rule 8:
TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO USE TECHNOLOGY SAFELY & PROPERLY.
If technology is to be implemented in schools, it is important to teach students that they learn the safe & proper way to use technology. We don't want to teach students to use the web if they cannot determine whether a website is credible or not. We also want to make sure that technology is not being used for unethical purposes. Students need to learn about technology and how it can be used in the real world as well as in the classroom.

  9. Don't trap technology in a room: I LOVE this rule because it states the impotance of haveing technology integrated in multiple aspects of learning in a varity of settings.

Technology is worthless without professional development: This is so true! If teachers cannot act as a facillitator to scaffold students from the technology they know to those that they don't, then they are clearly doing a disservice to their students!

The new "F-word' is fear: It is so important that we embrace technology in today's classrooms, and alienating new technologies, websites and services out of fear is, again, doing a disservice to our students.

    Kayla's 8th Rule:
Usel technology to make content relevant: Obviously we all have content and curriculum that we have to get out to our students, and as always they are reluctant to learn what is not presented to them in a way that they cannot relate. If we can use technology to make the curriculum relevant to their lives and easily accessable to them, then they are much more likely to retain the information and be searching for more.
